Client: Cork County Council
Scope
Since appointment by Cork County Council, DBFL played a key role in delivering multi-modal connectivity between the M8 Dunkettle Interchange, Glounthaune and the fast-growing metropolitan town of Carrigtwohill. The Dunkettle to Carrigtwohill Pedestrian and Cycle scheme incorporates new tree planting, improved bus stop infrastructure and safer access to local shops, restaurants and schools. The scheme also provides a Safer Route to School for the Gaelscoil Uí Drisceoil in Glanmire.
DBFL engaged with Iarnród Eireann, Bus Eireann & the National Transport Authority to improve the accessibility of Glounthaune Train Station. A working group was established with these stakeholders and Cork County Council to develop the station as a pilot mobility hub in accordance with the principles set-out in the Cork Metropolitan Area T ransport Strategy (CMATS). The project entails the provision of new platform access, rail overbridge and an innovative mobility hub providing seamless multi-modal interchange between pedestrian, cycle, bus, car and train services as well as smart mobility services.
The scheme delivered in excess of 8km of high quality pedestrian & cycle infrastructure for East Cork connecting Carrigtwohill to Little Island and onwards to Dunkettle.
This project was delivered in four separate phases with DBFL having prepared the detailed design and tender documentation for each of these phases. As part of the project, the River Lee Catchment was reviewed to determine the flood extent and potential impact, if any, to the pedestrian and cycle path. DBFL also provided construction stage services such as contract administration as well as acting as designer on each of the phases.
The scheme delivers an enhanced public realm through greening along the entire corridor and includes further landscaping measures, as designed by Áit Urbanism & Landscape. Additional features such as smart benches, ticketing & smart mobility solutions including e-bike infrastructure and Electric Vehicle Charging Points (EVCP) were also included in the designs.
