Client: Meath County Council
DBFL were tasked by Meath County Council with developing designs for the development of the Cycle Network in Ashbourne, Co Meath. The scheme which is being delivered in phases initialy included the delivery of enhanced pedestrian and cycle facilities along the Milltown Road between the Main Street and the Bannóg estate approximately 1.5km south.
DBFL supported MCC through the planning approvals process, produced preliminary and detailed design proposals for the Milltown Road in Ashbourne which since completion in 2021, has delivered much needed walking and cycling infrastructure connecting recently constructed residential developments, schools and Ashbourne town itself.
Subsequent phases of the scheme have included the design of segregated pedestrian and cycle facilities along the R135 corridor through Ashbourne between the M2 northern and southern interchanges across a total distance of approximately 2.6km. DBFL prepared detailed design and tender documentation for the scheme, and currently provide contract administration services during construction.
Further to upgrades to the main R135 corridor, the project included the development of a traffic calming scheme for the St Johnswood/Millbourne estate whilst also providing enhanced permeability and connectivity to Gaelscoil na Mí.
The scheme is one of the first to include design details from the new Cycle Design Manual such as fully segregated/cycle protected signalised junctions which were designed in advance of the publication of the CDM in accordance with emerging NTA guidance.
