Client: South Dublin County Council
DBFL provided civil & structural engineering, plus PSDP services on this project which comprised of a new North Stand, refurbishment works to the existing West stand including media and hospitality facilities, and works to the disabled seating areas in the South Stand at Tallaght Stadium.
The new North Stand provides increased capacity for the stadium, bringing the total capacity of the stadium to over 10,000, and also accommodates ground floor level commercial spaces and concessions, in addition to ancillary service spaces. Given its prominent position on the stadium site, with frontage onto the N81, the new North Stand is the defining aesthetic of the stadium, and this is reflected in the striking architectural design for the precast concrete stand with the inclusion of feature steel wing walls which fold at an angle from roof to ground level at either end of the stand.
In addition to the works for the new stand, extensive upgrading works have also been undertaken in the existing west stand providing additional hospitality and media facilities. The media seating area in the West Stand has been upgraded and extended, with expanded back of house media support areas provided. Hospitality facilities in the West Stand have also been upgraded and extended. Additionally works are also being undertaken in the South Stand to incorporate additional disabled viewing/seating areas.
These works coupled with the new North Stand, bring the stadium up to a UEFA category 4 stadium. This will enable the stadium to host all European games including group games for the Champions League, Europa League or Europa Conference League.
The key challenge of this project was working in a live stadium environment and ensuring stadium operations were maintaining undisrupted for the duration of the works. Construction traffic off the busy N81 had to be managed carefully and the off site construction of the superstructure reduced time on site.
The design approach maximised structural utilisation, with the precast nature of the superstructure minimising material waste and off site construction reducing time on site.
